There are a variety of careers available for those who wish to create game art. Anyone desiring to become a game art designer should take advantage of every opportunity to gain experience with computer art software and make a priority of developing a portfolio of their artwork they can show prospective employers. Most video game design companies will require a college degree in Game Art or Graphic Design for your application to even be considered so be sure to seek out a respected game design school at which to train. The average starting game artist salary is around $41,000 (USD) a year. An experienced game artist can earn as much as $95,000.
2D Game Art
Creates background themes, characters and static models within 2D game environments.
Requirements: Must have strong art skills and be proficient with Adobe Photoshop® or/and other virtual art software. After Effects®, Flash and particle experience are often useful.
3D Game Art
Constructs 3D models, virtual world environments and/or characters for use within video games. Involves the formation of the model structure, texturing and skinning of the model.
Requirements: Complete familiarity and proficiency with 3D modeling software. Experience with texture and lighting systems, and model rigging.
Modeling
Builds 3D and/or 2D models including prop models, vehicles, buildings, environments, characters. Works with artists to create models for use within game levels.
Requirements: Must be proficient in the use of model creation software and experienced with model skinning, texturing/shading and UV mapping. Should be familiar with model rigging and animation.
